  • a short-term stay in the territory of the Schengen Area, but not more than 90 days in a period of 180 days;
  • or transit through the Schengen Area.

The documents required to obtain a Schengen visa are:
  1. Passport, valid for at least 3 months;
  2. Residence permit in Romania, valid for at least 3 months;
  3. Visa application forms (one per person);
  4. 1 passport photo, not older than 6 months. Photos from which the applicant cannot be identified are not accepted;
  5. Visa processing fee;
  6. Proof of transport (plane, train or boat ticket or confirmed reservation, proof of renting a car used for travel);
  7. Proof of accommodation (hotel or motel reservation paid for or confirmed by the accommodation unit, apartment rental contract, letter of invitation);
  8. Proof of financial support necessary for living (bank account statement, credit card accompanied by bank account statement, traveler's checks, official invitation letter, other financial means);
  9. Medical insurance for the entire stay in the Schengen countries (min. EUR 30,000);
  10. Proof of purpose of the trip:
    • In case of tourist trip: the certificate issued by the travel company or, in case of individual trip, proof of payment of the accommodation price;
    • In case of transit: visa of the country of destination or other document proving the possibility of entering the country of destination (if necessary);
    • In case of carrying out some studies: the certificate from the receiving institution, as well as the proof of accommodation;
    • In case of a visit: letter of invitation issued by the Office for Immigration and Citizenship or invitation authenticated at the notary and copy of the passport or identity card of the person signing the invitation;
    • For family related visits, the necessary documents in case of a visit or the certificate regarding the family situation and the declaration in one's own responsibility about the purpose of the trip and the stay. The declaration must contain the degree of kinship, as well as the name, address and telephone number of the family member;
    • In case of business trip, the letter of invitation of the Schengen business partner, the proof of the existence of commercial connections, the certificate of the Chamber of Commerce about the business activity, as well as the proof of the dwelling during the trip;
    • In the case of travel for the purpose of treatment: the certificate of the institution appealed to, containing the certificate that the expenses of the treatment are covered, as well as the proof of the dwelling during the treatment;
    • In the case of carriers, the certificate of the transport company, respectively its request;
    • In case of visiting the grave of a buried relative: proof of the existence of the grave and proof of the degree of kinship;
    • In the case of travel for cultural purposes: signed mandate contract, invitation to a creative process, or invitation of the organizer of an event;
    • In the case of travel for sports purposes, the accreditation for the sporting event to be held, the contract signed with a club or the certificate issued by the represented club / Olympic committee / central authority for sports;
    • In case of participation in a conference: invitation from the organizers, and confirmation from the represented institution; proof of payment of the conference fee;
    • In case of continued travel to other Schengen member countries, the above documents must also be submitted for those countries. The documents mentioned above must be submitted in original and copy.

Note: In addition to the listed documents, sometimes, the consulate may request other documents.
