What you need to know if you want to study in Romania

If you are a citizen of a state outside the European Economic Area (EU + Norway + Iceland) and you want to study in Romania, you will have to:

  • enroll yourself in an educational unit and be accepted by it. The educational institution you may choose from can be either owned by the state or by a private entity; however, the private education institution must be a private institution accredited according to romanian legislation;
  • to obtain a long-stay visa for studies (as an: high school student / college student / postgraduate student / PhD student / student in an exchange program).

The following documents are required to obtain this visa:
  1. Proof of acceptance for studies issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research, showing that you will follow a form of full-time education;
  2. Proof of payment of the tuition fee for at least one year of study;
  3. Proof of financial means, in the amount of at least the minimum net monthly salary, for the entire period entered in the visa;
  4. Criminal record certificate or other document with the same legal value;
  5. Medical insurance during the validity of the visa;
  6. Approval of the parents or guardian regarding the stay for study purposes on the Romanian territory, if the foreigner is a minor.
In the case of student exchange programs, the following documents will be:
  1. Proof of acceptance for studies issued by the Romanian Ministry of Education and Research, showing that you will follow a form of full-time education;
  2. Proof of participation in a student exchange program, conducted by an organization established by law and recognized for this purpose;
  3. Proof from the student exchange organization that it will provide the means of maintenance and any costs of removal;
  4. Medical insurance during the validity of the visa;
  5. Proof of accommodation in a family selected by the organization that conducts the exchange of students and which has a living space considered normal for a family in Romania;
  6. Approval of the parents or guardian regarding the stay for the purpose of studies on the Romanian territory, if the foreigner is a minor;
  7. Letter of acceptance for studies - required only at the first extension of the right of residence.

Foreign students who have reached the age of 26 need social health insurance to extend the right of temporary residence, in accordance with Law no. 95/2006 on health care reform.

The right of residence may be extended by a maximum of 90 days after graduation, in order to finalize the school or university situation and to approve the study documents.

Employment during studies

If you study in Romania and have a residence permit for this purpose you can only work part-time (4 hours a day) and it is necessary to obtain a work permit. Click here for details.
